Personality-related concerns

A personality disorder evaluation should consider long-term patterns, their context and severity, and other possible explanations. I would want to hear your experience without reducing you to a label.

Long-term patterns and present-day problems

Personality disorders are a group of conditions, not one diagnosis. They involve enduring, inflexible patterns that differ from cultural expectations and cause serious difficulty in relationships, work, or social life.

Symptoms vary widely by diagnosis. People often seek care because of distress, conflict, mood or anxiety symptoms, substance use, or repeated problems rather than because they recognize a personality pattern.

MedlinePlus explains that diagnosis is based on a psychological evaluation and the duration and severity of symptoms. Review its personality disorders overview.

What a personality disorder evaluation may explore

A clinician may ask how patterns show up across relationships and settings, when they began, how stable they have been, and what happens during stress. Current safety and functioning also matter.

The evaluation may consider trauma, mood, anxiety, substance use, medical history, family history, and prior therapy or diagnoses. Similar outward behavior can have different causes and treatment needs.

Bring prior evaluations or treatment records if available, plus a few examples of recurring patterns and their effects. It is reasonable to ask how the clinician approaches diagnosis and avoids stigma.

Clarifying therapy and psychiatric care

Psychotherapy is central to treatment for many personality disorders. Medication may sometimes address particular symptoms or co-occurring conditions, but it does not replace an appropriate therapy plan.

Westfield describes psychiatric evaluation and medication management. Confirm whether therapy is offered, referred, or coordinated with an existing therapist.

Questions to ask before a personality evaluation

Does the practice evaluate the concern I am bringing? What kind of therapy may be appropriate? How would psychiatric care be coordinated with a therapist or another program?

Read the provider profile, check insurance information, and use the current contact route to confirm fit.
