Social anxiety

A social anxiety evaluation considers fear of being watched, judged, rejected, or embarrassed and how avoidance affects daily life. I would want to understand which situations feel difficult. The conversation can also clarify how much they limit the life you want to lead.

When social anxiety is more than shyness

Social anxiety can arise during conversations, meetings, public speaking, dating, eating in front of others, asking for help, or other situations where a person expects scrutiny.

Symptoms may include blushing, sweating, trembling, nausea, a racing heart, a blank mind, self-consciousness, or weeks of worry before an event. Avoidance may bring short relief while narrowing daily life.

NIMH distinguishes social anxiety disorder from ordinary shyness by persistent fear and interference with daily activities. Read its social anxiety guide.

What a social anxiety evaluation may explore

Describe the situations you fear, what you predict will happen, physical symptoms, avoidance, and how long the pattern has been present. Note whether the fear is broad or limited to performance situations.

A clinician may also ask about panic, depression, other anxiety, alcohol or substance use, physical health, medicines, prior therapy, and the impact on relationships, work, or school.

Bring two or three examples and the goals that matter to you, such as attending meetings, making calls, dating, or returning to school. Progress should be tied to daily life, not simply to a symptom score.

Therapy and medication for social anxiety

NIMH describes cognitive behavioral therapy and exposure-based approaches as common treatments. Medication may also be considered. The right plan depends on needs, preferences, and medical context.

Westfield lists psychiatric evaluation and medication management. Confirm whether therapy is offered here or coordinated with another clinician.

Questions to ask before a social anxiety appointment

Does the practice evaluate social anxiety? Is cognitive behavioral or exposure-based therapy available here? If medication is discussed, how would it fit with therapy and my goals?

Review the provider profile, insurance page, and contact options before scheduling.
